eBay has announced that it may have to close down Skype because of a dispute over licensing with Joltid, the founders of the service. Skype was bought from creators Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom in 2005 for $2.6billion but - rather clumsily - this deal did not include eBay owning a major piece of the technology that powers the software. Ever since, eBay has been licensing the much-needed technology from Joltid but this agreement has recently been revoked by the Skype founders.

Web tracking and privacy has always been a hot topic and now the Federal Trade Commission is due to launch new guidelines that recommend companies tell consumers more clearly about what data they capture and how it is used. And it’s been proposed that a uniformed link or clickable icon be developed to take consumers from a website or ad to a disclosure page. While here at big mouth media we agree that this is an effective approach, we wonder whether it will be clear enough for all web users to understand what data is being captured.

According to Scribd, the ‘print’ medium is on the brink of evolution and the next step is one that will enter the social sphere. Earlier today we reported that speculations were rife with the possibility of long-time rivals Microsoft and Yahoo! finally striking up a collaborative deal. Well, confirmation has now been released and the rumours are indeed correct - the two online colossuses have agreed to put the past behind them and announced a unifying move that will entail the pair challenging current industry sovereign Google . The new deal will involve Yahoo! abandoning its old search engine in favour of Bing, the new ‘decision engine’ recently released by Microsoft that has been making waves in the search sphere for some time now

A recent enhancement to Google’s mapping service has landed the search engine in hot water with Australian newspapers. Last month, the Mountain View giant announced that Google Maps would list hot property with a real estate feature providing aggregated listings of estate agents and publishers. The initiative was rolled out for testing in Australia, but now two of the country’s biggest newspaper groups are threatening to boycott Google as a result

As parts of eastern Africa are celebrating the arrival of broadband internet for the first time, it has been estimated that the active internet audience has now reached a global figure of 625m. The fourth annual Power to the People survey, carried out by Universal McCann, shows that of those 625m, 63% have joined a social networking site compared to 57% last year.
