How to Use Twitter as a Marketing Tool

January 15, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

Twitter has had a meteoric rise to popularity mainly due its nature of being a clever blend of blog and chat. Sharing links, exchanging ideas and generally keeping in touch without needing to reply immediately are key points that have contributed to its success. Due of its popularity, Twitter has turned into an excellent tool for online marketing.

Twitter works in a very simple way: either you follow someone or someone follows you or both. The people who follow you see everything you have to say and conversely you see everything that everyone you are following says. This ability to broadcast to your followers ensures that you can reach a specific target market.

So how do you pick people to follow and get them to follow you? Simply use the “find people” at the top of your Twitter account to find those who have an interest in your niche. For example, if you sell tomatoes, then you search with keywords that are relevant to tomatoes. From the resulting search, pick a couple of accounts with large amounts of followers to be base accounts. Then just proceed to following the people who are following those accounts. You will find that you will get several followers by just doing this.

As with any good method, if you abuse it you will lose it. Using Twitter is about building up your reputation. Therefore, you should avoid spamming and limit your promotional messages to a maximum of one in three Tweets. This will ensure that you do not portray yourself as a door-to-door sales man desperately pushing his products down people’s throats.

Social Media Marketing and Its Importance

January 14, 2010 by · Leave a Comment

The rapid growth that Social Media has experienced in the last few years has brought about many changes in online social structures. The exchange of opinions, constant discussions and a constant “plugged-in” presence ensures a well-informed and well-connected global audience. This represents an excellent opportunity for online businesses to take advantage of in order to promote their products.

Facebook is great example of how a business or individual can promote themselves or their product. All they have to do is create a fan page and from there on provide interesting content which keeps the fans returning and the fan base growing. Once there is enough of a fan base, messages can slowly start taking the form of propaganda that directs them to the website. This way highly targeted traffic can be sent to their website, which naturally means an increase in conversions.

Social media marketing can provide a website with primary and secondary traffic. Direct traffic as a result of social media marketing is defined as primary traffic and referral traffic resulting from primary traffic which contains links to the website is known as secondary traffic. Being popular on social media sites can also result in receiving a large amount of high quality links which in turn result in better search engine rankings.

The advantages to using social media to promote products are still not realized by many. This is either due to ignorance about the subject as a whole or ignorance on how to go about doing it. But those who do know are currently reaping the benefits of a low cost marketing method that is putting a lot of products and companies on the online map.
