If you are watching the news, you are seeing daily stories about how another government institution is in financial trouble. And while I despise the phrase “too big to fail,” it is true that governments are actually, “too important to fail.” At home and in business, we don’t have the luxury to be “too big” or “too important” to fail, so we must be more responsible and either reduce spending or increase revenue. Unfortunately, most politicians feel like they are exempt from having to reduce spending, so they are inclined to always seek methods to increase revenue, which makes our jobs harder when managing our personal or business budgets. While politicians tend to put too much focus on increasing revenue, small business owners tend to put too much focus on reducing spending. Bring Balance To The Force, Young Skywalker yes During a recession, most business owners pull the reins on advertising budgets, fearful of what tomorrow might bring… Those who remain fearful have forgotten what made them the success they are today. They have forgotten that they have a God-given talent to overcome the incredible obstacles in their paths

Yahoo! Schedules Holiday Shutdown

In an effort to cut back on expenses during the recession, Yahoo! is shutting down most of its offices from Dec. 25 through Jan. 1, according to the Wall Street Journal. Employees can use vacation time or take unpaid leave.

Report: Yelp Walks Away from $550 Million Google Deal

Tech Crunch is reporting that Yelp has walked away from a proposed deal to be acquired by Google – a deal that many people had assumed was all but signed just days earlier. Yelp is a review site currently operating in almost every major metropolitan area of the country that lets the public vote and gives their feedback on a wide range of stores and services within a local area. For example, a person could go to the local Yelp site for Portland and search to find different listings for Indian restaurants.

Google and Bing Increase November Market Share, Yahoo Drops

Americans submitted 14.4 billion queries to search engines in November, up one percent from October, according to data released by comScore. Once again, Google Sites came in on top accounting for 65.6 percent of the search market share (9.5 billion searches), followed by Yahoo! Sites at 17.5 percent (2.5 billion searches) and Microsoft Sites at 10.3 percent (1.5 billion.)

Google Expands Fast Flip with 55 Major Publishers

Google announced through its blog on Wednesday that it is expanding Google Fast Flip, a news reading service that aims to make the experience of reading newspapers and magazines online similar to reading hard copy versions. Fast Flip launched three months ago with a small handful of publications including the New York Times and Washington Post.

Despite the recession, 41% of consumers plan to spend as much money shopping online as they did one year ago, according to the first monthly “2009 Online Buyer Economic Trend Study” by Performics and ROI Research.
