A few months back, I wrote an article titled Google’s Panda Update: Haters, Cheaters and Consequences . The article was my defense of Google’s constant algorithm changes. In that article I naively wrote the following: “Unlike a lot of cynics out there, I believe that Google is trying deliver the most relevant and useful search results possible.” Well, I’ve always been a big enough man to admit when I’m wrong. Google +1 Buttons Now Available Across the Web

In March, Google unveiled its +1 button, a way for users to recommend content to their friends and contacts directly from Google search results and ads. Today, the search giant has rolled out the button to the entire Web. Now, both large and small websites can add to their site what many (including Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land) are calling Google’s answer to the Facebook “Like” button.

Google Accuses Microsoft of Stealing Search Data

The battle between Google and Microsoft for search engine supremacy is getting ugly. Google has accused Microsoft of stealing its search results for its Bing search engine. Specifically, Google believes that Microsoft has been copying its search results and algorithms with Bing, including delivering the same results as Google on misspelled words.

Google Expands Music-Related Search Results

Google announced on Friday that it has improved its music-related search results to include other video sites and search engines. Now when a user searches for Josh Groban, for example, they will find the most popular YouTube videos of the artist along with additional links to videos sites such as Dailymotion, MTV and MySpace as well as search engines such as Yahoo and Yandex.

Potential increases in volume and stronger returns on investment will lead small and mid-sized businesses to increase their advertising spending with search engines like Yahoo! and Bing versus Google in 2011, according to the Efficient Frontier Q4 2010 U.S. Digital Marketing Performance Report. Released on Tuesday, the report predicts that the ability to gain the same ROI using the Bing/Yahoo! platform will lead to advertisers spending $10,000 to $20,000 each month to pay more attention to Bing campaigns.

French Court Rules Google Guilty of Defamation

The AFP reports that Google and CEO Eric Schmidt have been convicted of defamation because of search results from its “suggest” feature, according to French legal affairs website legalis.net. According to Search Engine Land, this is the second time this year that Google has lost a lawsuit in France.
