Google Confirms Use of Social Signals in Rankings

Google SEO guru Matt Cutts has confirmed that the company is using social signals from sites such as Twitter and Facebook as part of its ranking algorithm. In a video posted at YouTube answering questions from Google Webmaster users, Cutts said that a recent report by Danny Sullivan at Search Engine Land is accurate and that social media signals are playing a role in Google’s site rankings.

Google Realtime Allows for Advanced Real Time Searches

PC World reports that Google has given its real-time search engine its own landing page and made improvements to its functionality. The new Google Realtime search engine gives people one place to come to see real time results culled from sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Previously, people looking to find real time search results on Google needed to toggle on filters inside the standard search page.

Yahoo! Defends Search Engine Title

Days after announcing the complete transition of Yahoo!’s search back-end infrastructure to Microsoft Bing, Yahoo! reminded the public that it is still a search engine. In a post on the Yahoo! Search Blog, Senior Vice President of Yahoo! Search Products Shashi Seth addressed rumors that the company is no longer a search engine. According to Seth, stating that Yahoo! is no longer a search engine is equivalent to saying Boeing or Airbus aircrafts are no longer airline manufacturers simply because they outsource critical components of their products.

Google Breaks Into VOIP Space

Google made a major push into the VOIP market on Wednesday, announcing that U.S.-based customers can make domestic and international phone calls from inside their Gmail accounts. The move brings renewed competition to leading VOIP provider Skype as it nears its initial public offering.
