In TechCrunch’s “The Madness of King Rupert” by Paul Carr he reports, incredulously, that News International is to install a turnstile on its websites this June and wonders whether Murdoch is simply a barking latter-day George III or visionary in disguise. Newspaper sales have been in decline for quite some time now and companies have been searching for a business model that will make money from their websites. News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks said it was “a crucial step towards making the business of news an economically exciting proposition”. Accepted, but is the Times is specialist enough to make that claim? If not, Paul Carr is right and readers will go elsewhere for content when they reach the turnstiles. The BBC spent a long time looking at how the newspaper industry could change its model, detailed in a 94-page report by Peter Horrocks on the subject. Subsequently, the Corporation came under fire from the Murdoch clan as being uncompetitive, as television license fees pay for its content. Google TV brings the web into the living room

Google and Intel have teamed up with Sony to develop a new generation of televisions and set-top boxes under the title Google TV. The new platform, which is reportedly based on Google’s Android platform and runs on Intel Atom chips, will aim to make it easier for people to access web application from their TV set, making accessing social networks, online games and video sharing sites as straightforward as switching the channel

YouTube to host full-length television episodes

YouTube fans in the United Kingdom now have the chance to watch their favourite television shows on the internet, as the video sharing site turns its attention to offering full-length programmes to viewers who choose to do most of their television watching online. Now rivalling the BBC’s iPlayer, which has proven to be an immensely popular addition to the broadcaster’s website, YouTube - whose parent company is none other than Mountain View search colossus, Google - has already signed 60 partners to its service, which is available on a new page on the YouTube site. The partners, which include Channel 4, will likely be hoping that the move to the internet will allow them to continue reaping the rewards from advertising
