SOPA Spells Loss — A SPN Exclusive Article

January 16, 2012 by elegant · Leave a Comment

Every business with an online presence – no matter the size – is going to be affected by the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which is set to be voted on when Congress resumes later this month. Companies like Google that provide a gateway to diverse content on the web will be hit directly, but even smaller businesses – from online payroll providers to ecommerce sites – could be affected, even if they don’t at first appear to have a direct link with anything SOPA was created to fight. Every user of the Internet, whether a business owner or not, needs to understand why SOPA exists and what the unintended consequences of this poorly considered piece of legislation will really be, both for small companies and the nation as a whole. After educating yourself, take action! If you disagree with SOPA and want to help stop it before it causes any damage, there are things you can do, both through your company and as an individual. What is SOPA? SOPA was introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives last October by Republican Representative Lamar Smith and 12 co-sponsors. It was created as part of an effort to combat online piracy on behalf of copyright holders by requiring that any site that links to or does business with an offending party be held legally responsible for any illegal acts the offender might commit, whether or not the site contacted is engaging in any illicit activities. What Does This Mean For Small Business?

Establishing Ownership of Your Content – The Rules are Changing — A SPN Exclusive Article

December 31, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

I was sketching out two marketing plans over the holidays for a couple of new clients and decided it was time to incorporate some of the research data/results I’ve collected during the latter part of 2011. Generally I’d spend more time testing things on my own sites first, but I’m confident enough with the results of basic testing that I’ve decided to put the ideas into live production. There are two basic interrelated concepts that I’ve been working on – content length, and establishing ownership of new content in a way which minimizes the chance of your content being considered ‘dupe’ and increases your page authority and SERP’s. The web is all about content, it’s basically one large article directory. The task for a search engine is to provide an efficient indexing system so we can connect with the information we are looking for in the fewest possible steps.

Lack of Communication is Unacceptable in a Virtual Work Environment

December 30, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment

A virtual work environment is not an uncommon one, given today’s increasing we-are-a-global-village scenario. As employment spans geographical boundaries and employees working for a single organization could be doing so from anywhere in the world, the shifting nature of work does present its own set of challenges. One of them, and arguably the most pertinent of all, concerns the sticky issue of communication. A virtual work environment is another form of outsourcing and communication can be said to be the lifeline of any Outsourcing success. Which brings us to the crux of the matter – lack of communication is unacceptable in a virtual employee environment. This refers to both parties involved – the outsourcing service provider as well as the virtual employee who is working for the client. Lack of Communication from the Vendor The choice of an outsourcing partner plays a crucial role in determining the success of any outsourced venture

Producing A Marketing Campaign That Works With Google

September 28, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment

Oftentimes when marketing with articles, it’s easy to get the impression that you need to do something tricky or fancy to make your marketing efforts “work”. In actual fact, getting a higher website ranking and the accompanying upsurge in visitors is really very simple: 1 – First, you have to focus on your website or blog. Fill your site with lots of really interesting and helpful information for your viewers. It’s a great idea to have a website that is loaded with valuable content and that is updated with new information regularly. Your first task is to make a website that is really pleasing to your viewers. If your viewers are happy, then Google will be too. Google’s goal is to please its search customers, so if its customers (who are also your viewers) are happy with what they find at your website, then Google is going to be delighted as well. 2 – Once you have produced a fantastic website you start to think about marketing it.

My Top Six Link Building Strategies For Beginners

September 14, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment

In this article I want to cover off back links, what they are, why you need them and how to get them. Now if your just starting out you’ll have heard of these but certainly I know for Sam & I when we first started out in internet marketing there’s so much info to take in, it blows your mind so I thought a brief explanation, beginners guide if you will might be handy, so here goes… What are Links? Broadly speaking Links are a ‘link’ between your site and another, so as an example you may find a site in the same niche as you links to you because you are not the same but complementary to one another – that’s the basics. You then get ‘one way links’ & ‘back links’- now stay with me on the detail here because One-Way links are also termed back links. But the unique thing about one-way links is that they do not return a link to the website linking to them, in other words they are not reciprocal

Groupon Acquires Pelago

April 21, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment

As of yesterday the daily deal site known as Groupon purchased the website Whrrl, which is primarily used to locate a friend and where they have been to suggest new social locations for one to explore. Whrrl announced on its website that it will be officially shutting down effective April 30th 2011. Users can download their activity from the websites main page so there is no fear of losing their information. However, the union is questionable as both websites provide very different services, Groupon for daily deals, and Whrrl for friend activity, so it is curious as to why Groupon has taken this bold step.
