YouTube have rolled out their biggest-ever site facelift today, with new features including news feeds and social network sharing options. Many of the overhauled features have social element to them, in keeping with Google’s new social direction. “Our recent Channels expansion, our grants and education programs, and this design are all focused on helping you discover a broader range of entertainment on YouTube,” the company said in a blog post . “We’re always innovating and testing new stuff out to make the experience the best it can be for you.The new homepage displays a central news feed and features videos that have been uploaded to the site by users on Google+.” Large Facebook and Google+ buttons are positioned on the left hand column so users can share and see video content from YouTube on their chosen social network. “To help you get more into YouTube, we’re making it easier to find and follow great Channels when you arrive.

YouTube launches Merch Store

Google-owned YouTube has announced plans to start selling content-related merchandise via the site on user channels. The online video giant blogged that the new addition will see them teaming up with third-party affiliate sites to flog goods to the masses. “Fans will be able to buy artists’ merchandise, digital downloads, concert tickets and even unique experiences like meetups,” Senior Technical Account Manager Christian Weitenberner wrote on the YouTube blog . The latest YouTube venture will see the site partnering up with several other companies, including Topspin for merchandise, Songkick for concerts and iTunes and Amazon for music downloads. The brand new Merch Store will be rolled out on the video sharing site over the next few weeks, and with 800 million visitors on the site and three billion videos viewed each day, the online video giant is hoping to capitalise on its vast amount of traffic . Although exact financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, YouTube indicated it intends to take a small percentage of sales in order to cover costs

‘Free the Hikers’ Cause Gets Attention on YouTube

In an effort to put pressure on the Iranian government to free the three American hikers who accidently crossed over the Iranian border six months ago, the “Free the Hikers” group continues to collect petition videos as the 200th day approaches, according to the YouTube Blog Citizen Tube.

YouTube Opens Partnership Program to More Users

Just about anyone can now get paid for creating a video on YouTube, as long as it attracts viewers. Google has announced they are extending the YouTube Partnership Program (YPP) to include individual popular videos on the site. While the YPP was initially created to help YouTube’s more popular users make money from their videos, such as prolific users like Fred and ValsArtDiary, the company now plans to invite individual users with amateur-made videos that have accumulated a lot of viewers.
