iPAD killed the Photocopier
May 12, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Not since the IBM PC was developed has a computer hit the market that can change the way we view the world. While people talk about Apple’s Tablet PC, the iPAD, being a competitor to the notebook, there are larger implications. The iPad is the first computer that can change the way we view documents. It combines the visual appeal of print and the interaction of the web together in a way no product has done before. The iPAD is the first step into a paperless world where all documents are viewed as data. In the first 28 days since its release, Apple sold one million iPADS. This figure is even higher than iPHONE sales when it was launched. The iPAD succeeds where previous products such as Amazon Kindle have failed, but it was not greeted with universal approval when launched. “Isn’t it just a big iPHONE?” was the most common remark, whilst others tagged it ‘iLAME’

Google set to square off with Amazon and Apple over ebooks
May 5, 2010 by publisher · Leave a Comment
In the burgeoning marketplace of digital book sales, a new chapter has begun, as heavyweight Google looks primed to take on market leader Amazon and all-around tech rival Apple in a new online store this year. The venture, called Google Editions, has been turning heads specifically due to it not being tied to a certain device - such as Amazon’s Kindle, the market-leading e-reader, or Apple’s iPad, which recently eclipsed the 1 million units sold mark. “It is a different approach to what most readers today have and the vision is to be able to access books in a device agnostic way,” Gabriel Sticker, a spokesman for the Mountain View-based company, said. The company, it seems, remains unfazed by publishing rows with organisations around the world opposed to its scanning of in- and out-of-print tomes, a library which now numbers near 12 million. Google’s selection of material would place it with a tremendous lead over Apple and Amazon, in addition to its multiplatform availability. According to manager for strategic partner development, Chris Palma, Google Editions is set for launch this summer, as early as June or July. Speaking at a publishing industry event in New York, Palma said the ebooks would be available for purchase through the search giant’s book search service, though independent retailers could also embed volumes on their own websites, with Google taking a pinch of the profits. Analysts see this as a pivotal time for the ebook industry, with the Yankee Group foreseeing a jump digital readership and sales in the US of nearly 100 per cent over the next three years

The Ability to Twitter From @anywhere
March 25, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
At the recent SXSW Conference, Twitter Co Founder Ev Williams announced a major framework they have in the pipeline called @anywhere. The idea sprouted from the difficulty people have when they browse web sites and want to follow particular persons or businesses they come across on Twitter. At the moment, if you want to do this, unless there is an obvious “Follow me on Twitter” link, you need to conduct a search for the person or business on Twitter, locate their account and then login to your Twitter account to add them. @anywhere will apparently enable web surfers to interact and follow people directly from their web sites with a single click. From the official blog post : “Soon, sites many of us visit every day will be able to recreate these open, engaging interactions providing a new layer of value for visitors without sending them to Twitter.com… When we’re ready to launch, initial participating sites will include Amazon, AdAge, Bing, Citysearch, Digg, eBay, The Huffington Post, Meebo, MSNBC.com, The New York Times, Salesforce.com, Yahoo!, and YouTube. Imagine being able to follow a New York Times journalist directly from her byline, tweet about a video without leaving YouTube, and discover new Twitter accounts while visiting the Yahoo! home page…” Participating site owners won’t need an API to make this happen either – apparently @anywhere will run via a few lines of javascript added to their HTML code. Already, 13 of the biggest web players have signed up for @anywhere, including sites like Amazon, Bing, Yahoo! and YouTube. No launch date has been announced yet, but Twitter’s blog hints it will be *soon*.

The proposed $125 settlement between Google and the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and Author’s Guild has been rejected by the US Department of Justice, due to copyright and antitrust issues. The agreement would have led to Google’s creation of a vast digital library of published works, in addition to the controversial Book Rights Registry. According to ITProPortal, the registry would have allowed consumers to purchase online books while allowing copyright holders to exclude their works.
