Facebook and Google set to tangle in new tech rivalry

July 7, 2010 by publisher · Leave a Comment

With rumours of Google’s most-recent stab at the social media market circulating last week, many have seen the move as a direct strike against Facebook - the runaway leader of the social networking pack. However, according to a New York Times analysis of the marketplace, Facebook - which started up just over five years ago on a university campus - stands to gain more ground against its Mountain View foe than the search seraph itself. “There is nothing more threatening to Google than a company that has 500 million subscribers and knows a lot about them and places targeted advertisements in front of them,” venture capitalist Todd Dagres, an investor in Twitter, told the NYT. “For every second that people are on Facebook and for every ad that Facebook puts in front of their face, it is one less second they are on Google and one less ad that Google puts in front of their face,” Dagres said. For its part, Google has attempted to take down the social kingpin several times in the past. However, OpenSocial - an inter-site programming coding language - faltered against the Facebook platform, especially after hackers cracked the code to snoop on users’ information, and Google Buzz did not prove to be the success the search giant hoped.

Why You Need A .htaccess File For SEO

June 29, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

There are a good chance that you are wondering what the topic of SEO has to do with the .htaccess file. In fact, it plays quite an important role in the way your website is ranked by the search engines. The problem is that few people are aware of its importance and it could be affecting the ranking of your website right at this moment. What Is A .htaccess File? According to Wikipedia, a .htaccess file is “the default name of a directory-level configuration file that allows for decentralized management of web server configuration.” If you’re not a computer whiz (and I’m not), such a definition is simply impossible to understand. So putting aside all the computer programming terminology, a .htaccess file is a tiny file which is placed within a website to do a number of functions. This article will only cover 2 of these functions (there are many others) because they are only ones related to the topic of SEO. I will also show you how to write the .htaccess file so that you use your .htaccess file for maximum SEO effect. Blocking Users A .htaccess file can be used to allow and block users by domain or IP address

Article Writing & Dental Self-Extraction

May 28, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

For most of us, writing an article is as much fun as a trip to the dentist, and each word extracted from our pen is as painful as pulling our teeth out one by one… I’ve just been reviewing a client’s article marketing strategy and am depressed at the fundamental shortcomings in both the approach and execution… Often, my depressions are a spur to a story – the painstaking explanation of the error of the client’s ways providing a foundation for an article of my own. CONTENT: Reputable article distribution directories specifically do not permit advertising. Nor will they approve excessive but utterly pointless keyword use in the content. The only thing in the content that matters is that you provide an interesting, authoritative, original, informative and non-commercial article on the specific topic. In this case study, what was required was more along the lines of a travel article, discussing aspects relating respectively to Holiday Homes in New Zealand, Luxury Lodges in New Zealand and Luxury Accommodation in New Zealand. What we had was 3 articles, keyword-stuffed with multiple iterations of both the business name and the targeted keywords The goal is to get it published – therefore, you need a catchy title, and interesting, topical and/or timely information. You do not need to add multiple iterations of the targeted keywords anywhere in the article itself. In most article repositories, the article body usually won’t generate a direct benefit to your website per se. What you need is an 800 word story that captures people’s interest and makes them want to include it, with attribution (author’s credits) on their website… You should therefore focus on getting the primary keyword phrase/s you want to target in the (maximum of 2) links in the Author’s Bio… Unfortunately, the first of three articles I previewed from this client had; 387 words in total 11 iterations of the business name 7 iterations of the primary keyword phrase (5 complete / 2 partial) 5 iterations of the secondary keyword phrase no Authors Bio LINKS: Most article distribution directories do not permit links in the content body, only in the Author’s Bio section.

Developers look set to put Facebook on the map - or vice versa

May 10, 2010 by publisher · Leave a Comment

Mapping and GPS technology may not be far off for social media giants Facebook, according to recent reports across the media. After a slight shock at its non-launch at the F8 developer conference, a section of code seems to suggest that the feature is in the works after all. MG Siegler of TechCrunch revealed yesterday that an error loading the site on a Safari-enabled touch phone precipitated the discovery. When viewing the site through Safari’s debug mode, the error was pinned down to a “places_tab” - something that does not currently exist on the site. Siegler said exploring the code further provided the revelation that “Places” would share a user’s geographical location - including latitude, longitude, altitude, heading and speed - using this information to populate a section of Facebook listing nearby venues and allowing users to ‘check in’. This, of course, would pose a great threat to similar social start-ups, including Foursquare, which just reached its one-millionth user and uses a check-in system with bars and restaurants, in addition to other businesses. The system rewards users with the most visits, and has worked with large chains to promote various locations. According an unnamed executive speaking to AdAge.com, there are a number of such large corporations waiting to be first in line for deals with Facebook. With a hundred million people using Facebook mobile, and a million on Foursquare, advertisers are holding out for something similar to “Places”, some experts have said

How To Make Your eBay Listing ATTRACTIVE To Your Target Market

April 1, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

Your eBay listing is your salesperson. Most sales people look smart and professional. Your eBay listing must also look smart and professional and give the appearance of a legitimate business. This will instil confidence in your buyers. If you are selling the same item as someone else on eBay, but your listing is more professional and gives the impression of a legitimate business (whereas your competitor’s does not) then people will be more likely to buy from you. They may even be willing to pay more to buy the same item from you than from your competitor – because they have more confidence in you. Make your eBay listing attractive and professional but avoid flashy gimmicks that distract. Just because you can add blinking images and flash video and music doesn’t mean you should.

Does Your Web Site Pass the Title Tag Test?

March 24, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

You know those words in the top bar of the browser when you’re on a website? You may not have noticed them before now, but you’ll want to pay attention to what shows there for your site from now on. Those words are from the page’s title meta tag, a part of the code that makes up the page. And while the title tag is just one small part of the code, it plays a really big role. Title tags are crucial in getting your site indexed and ranked in the search engines. A title tag tells the search engine what your page is about – and it’s also what displays in search results to represent your site. Let’s take a look at your title tags now. Pull up your site and look at what appears in the very top bar of the browser. If you’re seeing generic terms like “Untitled Document”, “Welcome to our Home Page”, “About Us” or “Contact Us” as you click through the pages, it’s time for an overhaul
