How Google Panda Has Impacted SEO for Newer Businesses – A SEO-News Exclusive Article

November 10, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment

I’m sure most SEO’s have already read several articles about how to recover from the Google Panda or Farmer updates, many of which seem to be the same generic “10 SEO Facts” everyone should know moving forward. For those who remain in the dark about the Panda updates, in short, they have been very effective at weeding out sites with crappy content as well as keyword rich domains with crappy content. I’m not going to regurgitate the same information about quality and relevancy mattering more than ever, because it always has mattered. For Google, trust and authority have always been important, only now websites are going to have a much harder time showing up in the organic search results without it. Google’s most recent update may very well have forced many SEO’s to step up their content quality and re-evaluate their practices, but how has it affected online marketing for new and small businesses with smaller budgets? Larger companies with deep pockets have remained relatively un-phased by the Panda updates. Why? Because they typically have well established authoritative sites that already generate plenty of traffic combined with a robust, well-rounded paid advertising and media placement campaign that also drives plenty of traffic. But for the little guy, well you’ve got to earn your trust and there aren’t any shortcuts anymore

Happy birthday to the iPod

October 24, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment

Ten years ago – on 23 October 2001 – Steve Jobs took the stage at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters and announced a new device that would change the way people purchase and listen to music all over the world – the iPod. Within two months of going on sale, Apple sold 125,000 iPods – even despite a $399 price tag – and the product was already on its way to becoming a classic. As a result of a decade of popularity, Apple has sold 320 million iPods around the world. The first iPod captivated users with its sleek design and 1,000-song capacity. Today, the iPod Classic can hold up to 40,000 songs. Over time the product evolved – spawning different designs and models like the Shuffle, Nano and Touch. What started as a bulky and sometimes temperamental music player morphed through each generation into a fully integrated colour device that could play music, movies and games

Blogger haven Tumblr takes in $85m investment

September 25, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

Tumblr is the latest social outlet to see a surge in spending cash, as venture capitalists – including Sir Richard Branson – poured $85 million into the start-up. First reported by the New York Times and subsequently confirmed by the company itself, Tumblr found the financing through Greylock Partners, Insight Venture Partners, the Chernin Group, Spark Capital, Union Square Ventures and Sequoia Capital in addition to Branson. “This additional capital allows us to continue to scale our business and give real focus to the further development of Tumblr,” chief executive and founder David Karp said in an email. Tumblr launched just under five years ago as a more social alternative to traditional blogging services. Incorporating features such as simple ‘reblogging’ – similar to retweeting, only on a larger scale – the site has grown to become a powerhouse in the social media sphere. A report published by Nielsen earlier this month confirmed the surge of the social standout, saying it had nearly tripled its number of unique US visitors in just one year – and purely on word of mouth advertising. The New York-based firm also recently eclipsed 10 billion total posts, based on nearly 30 million unique blogs, and all signs lead to an IPO for the company some time in 2012. According to Karp, monthly page views grew from two to 13 billion over the course of 2011, making the new found financing even more important. “It is incredibly important to us that we work with partners who understand our vision and share our ambition to build the best platform for the most creative people in the world,” In an email disclosed by the Wall Street Journal , Greylock investor John Lilly likened the site to the early days of other sites now at the top of the social ladder

Press conference sparks rumours of Amazon tablet

September 25, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

Amazon is rumoured to be announcing a new tablet this week at a press conference scheduled for Wednesday in New York. Speculation about an Amazon tablet has been growing for months, reigniting this week when word broke about Wednesday’s press conference. Analysts speculate the Amazon tablet will be a revamped version of the existing Kindle e-reader. It will be priced cheaper, however, undercutting Apple by selling its tablet for $250, but, similar to the iPad, will operate by touchscreen. Unlike other competitors, Amazon is well positioned to take on Apple’s stronghold on the market because of its online store, which makes books, movies and music available to users at the touch of a button. While the Amazon tablet is expected to be a simpler tablet than the iPad, it could offer consumers the features they want most at a lower price

‘My World Shared’ is the UK’s first art exhibition for Instagram photos, organised by Instagrammers London ( @IGersLondon ), a group of iPhone-equipped photography enthusiasts. Instagram has amassed more than seven million users in just under a year of existence and recently announced that over 150 million photos have been shared on its network. The app’s also just released a major update, v2.0, adding real-time filtering and other features. Instagrammers London is a group of photographers who love using the app and its filters to create images of the capital. They regularly organise photo walks and other social events based around the idea of Instagram photography, but decided to take it one step further and put together an exhibition of their work. “Earlier this year, a few of Instagrammers who live in and around London organised their first Instameet, a ‘real-life’ meetup for avid Instagram users. Following that first Instameet, helped to grow by Instagramers.com (a worldwide network of avid Instagrammers), many other meetups were organised, where the idea of having an Exhibition was born,” the exhibition website says .

SEO Lessons from Local Businesses

More than once in the six years that I have been providing SEO services for websites, I have had the opportunity to discuss with individual business owners their search engine optimization needs. Now and again, I run across an individual business owner who is quick to say that SEO is absolutely worthless. When confronted with such an absolute statement, I like to press for details. It has been my experience that people who speak in negative absolutes will have a horror story to share. In this article, I am going to detail some of the stories I’ve heard, which frequently tells more about some of the people in our industry, than it does about the effectiveness of search engine marketing. PROBLEM #1 – “I rank number one in Google, and yet, I have never earned a dime from my website…” When I first heard this story, I was very surprised… After all, if your SEO company did good keyword research, there is no reason why you should not be getting traffic and a few sales from a top ranking in Google. I pressed for more details… I learned that the company who built the website also did the search engine optimization. It only took a couple of minutes to learn that the website design company optimized this fellows’ website for the name of his company.
