The craze sweeping the nation this winter season comes from the NFL. Of course I’m talking about Tebowing, originated by Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow, and you either love him or hate him. Purging religious beliefs from the equation, Tim Tebow along with the Broncos have strung together a series of impressive comebacks before recently bowing to the superior Brady Bunch and the Patriots. Denver was left for dead on multiple occasions through three quarters plus in games, only to rise up like Lazarus to overcome the football Reaper and stand in victory. Is there a management lesson in this over-hyped story for small company owners, executives and corporate officers? Tebow’s type of play has been derided as unsustainable, tagged as downright ugly, and parodied on Saturday Night Live. It’s also been applauded by evangelicals, adopted by presidential candidates, and embraced by middle-America. Premium themes cover a large gamut of layout options and design styles that will appeal to the majority of users and which can be used as the basis for other layouts and designs. Although there are several common layouts, the majority of the layouts fall in to just one or two categories: division by columns and division by rows. These layouts divide the content in a way that saves portions of the screen for navigation, content, and other important information with columns dividing the content horizontally and rows dividing it vertically. One of the most common layout styles is a two-column layout. This layout generally has the navigation bar in a smaller column to the left-most or right-most side of the panel and which utilizes a larger central area of the screen to display the content. Don’t let the simplicity fool you, though – this layout is capable of achieving beautiful things with simple modifications. A great example of this layout can be found in the “Graphix” theme.

Social Media as a Negotiating Tool

Social media has blown onto the scene the last couple of years with the popular websites of Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and many others. Nobody can tell for sure what social media will look like five years from now, but what everyone can agree upon is that the concept of using the internet to socially communicate is not going away. For salespeople, an important question is, “Can social media help in negotiating?” My answer is, “Yes, it can.” I’m not saying you should directly negotiate with another person by way of a social media (although I suppose there might be exceptions where this is possible). What I am saying is that social media is a perfect tool that someone can use to help frame a situation or build their on-line reputation before the negotiations even begin. Negotiations are won or lost in two critical areas. The first is the period of time leading up to the start of the negotiations, when both parties are preparing to negotiate. The second is at the end, when the two parties are working out the details of the negotiation. With regard to social media, I am not an advocate of conducting business negotiations in public.
