Zappos suffers major data breach
January 16, 2012 by publisher · Leave a Comment
In what’s seen as the first major cyber-attack of 2012, Amazon-owned online retailer Zappos has fallen victim to a data breach affecting as many as 24 million users. “We were recently the victim of a cyber-attack by a criminal who gained access to parts our internal network and systems through one of our servers in Kentucky,” said Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh in an email to employees. It is believed that the hacker was able to access customer names, email addresses, billing and postal addresses, phone numbers, as well as cryptographically scrambled passwords and the last four digits of customers’ credit card numbers. To combat customer data vulnerability the company said it expired and reset customers’ passwords and would be sending an email with further instructions to all 24 million of its customers. The full nature of the hacking incident is yet to be determined, but in the meantime the Zappos website is currently “not accepting international traffic ,” according to a notice on the site. The company is cooperating with U.S

Siri a data-hungry virtual assistant

Apple’s virtual assistant Siri is doubling data intake on the iPhone 4S, a new study finds. When compared with its predecessors, network firm Arieso found iPhone 4S users are crunching twice as much data as iPhone 4 users, and three times as much as iPhone 3G users. The culprit, according to Arieso, is Siri – which makes use of the web to help users do everything from check the weather to find local restaurants and send emails and texts. iPhone 4S users are utilizing Apple’s virtual assistant to do more, and as a result, eating more data in the process. Further, the iPhone regularly syncs content with Apple’s servers, also contributing to the data binge.

Establishing Ownership of Your Content – The Rules are Changing — A SPN Exclusive Article
December 31, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment
I was sketching out two marketing plans over the holidays for a couple of new clients and decided it was time to incorporate some of the research data/results I’ve collected during the latter part of 2011. Generally I’d spend more time testing things on my own sites first, but I’m confident enough with the results of basic testing that I’ve decided to put the ideas into live production. There are two basic interrelated concepts that I’ve been working on – content length, and establishing ownership of new content in a way which minimizes the chance of your content being considered ‘dupe’ and increases your page authority and SERP’s. The web is all about content, it’s basically one large article directory. The task for a search engine is to provide an efficient indexing system so we can connect with the information we are looking for in the fewest possible steps.

Facebook ordered to increase privacy by Irish regulators
December 21, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment
Facebook has received a full audit of its systems by Irish regulators and agreed to make more than a dozen privacy improvements within the next six months. The recommendations made by Irish Data Commissioner Billy Hawkes came after an investigation concerning the social network’s use of personal user data launched in October. Facebook houses all its user data and operations outside of the US and Canada in Ireland. Two months ago, regulators launched the investigation after a series of controversies surrounding Facebook user data surfaced, with claims of ‘shadow profiles’ being created for non-members. The regulators found this was not the case, and that Facebook only collects data about non-users for security purposes.

Free software activists are set to take on the search heavyweights with their own peer-to-peer search engine . YaCy, – a free search engine – are hoping to usurp the likes of Bing, Google and Yahoo with a ‘new approach’ to search. Instead of using a central server like conventional search engines , YaCy gets results from a network of independent ‘peers’ – users who have downloaded YaCy software. The decentralisation idea behind the new search engine is that no single entity decides on the search results or the order in which results appear, but rather, results are generated from a network of private companies and contributing peer operators. “Most of what we do on the Internet involves search.
