Apple pulls iPad and iPhones in Germany

February 3, 2012 by admin · Leave a Comment

Motorola has dealt a double-whammy to Apple in Germany. Following a December ruling by a German court that Apple failed to license one of Motorola’s wireless intellectual properties and the ruling’s subsequent patent injunction, the Cupertino-based company has now begun to pull older iPad and iPhone models from it German online store. In a separate lawsuit, Motorola also won a permanent injunction against the push email service of Apple’s iCloud and any devices that can access the services in Germany. The sales ban relates to a Motorola-owned patent for a “method for performing a countdown function during a mobile-originated transfer for a packet radio system.” The separate push email ban would only come into effect if Motorola decides to enforce the judgement, which deals with a patent relating to two-way communications between pagers and other devices. Apple isn’t taking the news sitting down, however, and has vowed to appeal the rulings and to keep its products available elsewhere for its German customers.

Google home page gets a makeover

January 3, 2012 by creative · Leave a Comment

A new year, a new look for Google’s home page. In a bid to simplify the page and improve user experience, the titans of search are rolling out one of the biggest home page changes to date. The revamp takes away the black bar that currently runs horizontally across the top of the Google home page and replaces it with a grey logo. When a user clicks or highlights the new logo, a drop-down menu appears offering seven alternative services to the site’s search page, such as Gmail and YouTube. Experts are speculating the change was designed to promote more of Google’s businesses while still maintaining its preferred uncluttered and plain minimalist front page. A spokesperson for Google said that the roll-out was also designed to improve user-experience

Proposed legal changes to the European Union’s Data Protection Directive may cause trans-Atlantic tensions over Internet privacy. According to the New York Times , European justice commissioner Viviane Reding plans to insert new wording into Europe’s main data privacy law that would likely require non-E.U. companies to abide by stricter rules on data collection or face fines and prosecution. Ms Reding signalled her intentions to strengthen privacy laws in a speech to publishers in Brussels on Tuesday. “Companies who direct their services to European consumers should be subject to E.U. data protection laws. Otherwise, they should not be able to do business on our internal market,” she said. “This also applies to social networks with users in the E.U.
