According to Reuters, state news agency Xinhua has reported technology company big wigs in China have agreed to work together to intensify controls on social media and halt the perceived “spread of harmful information” on the internet. Ten of the country’s top executives, including Sina Corp’s Charles Chao, Baidu’s Robin Li and Alibaba’s Jack Ma, took part in a three-day discussion held in Beijing and hosted by one of the country’s Internet regulators, the State Internet Information Office. The summit was held to discuss ways in which tech companies could work together to curb online gossip and rumours, pornography, fraud and other information which might be deemed harmful to the state – or in other words information deemed unacceptable to the ruling party. The companies which agreed to the crackdown plan to “strengthen self-control, self-restraint and strict self-discipline,” Xinhua news website said, according to The Register .

October 5, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment

Many of my b-to-b clients feel stuck in the mud when it comes to gaining the attention of their email subscribers. They use the same very limited number of techniques, strategies and angles time and time again. They realize recipients on their lists probably feel uninterested in hearing from them, which is but one step short of losing them when they unsubscribe. If this describes you, try these bolder approaches that arouse curiosity, freshen up your emails and improve both open rates and response – without getting downright silly or harming your business image. Along with each idea, I’ve provided an example illustrating how you might put it to work. 1. Ask a surprising or provocative question. Whoever Heard of a 78% Response to a One-Paragraph Email Blast? 2.

Google Plus gets political

September 15, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment

The leaders of all three largest political parties have signed up to Google + in an attempt to make themselves more accessible to voters. Prime Minister David Cameron of the Conservatives, Labour’s Ed Miliband and Liberal Democrat and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will all have their own profiles on the new social networking site, according to the Telegraph. Google+ was launched in on a trial basis in June and now has more than 25 million members. The network’s ‘Circles’ feature, which allows members to share content with specific groups, could be particularly appealing to politicians, as it will let them communicate with other MPs, constituents and the general public. Cameron took the opportunity of his first post on the network to say: “Proud to see British politicians leading the way when it comes to embracing new methods of engaging people online, from e-petitions to the latest developments in social media.” Labour leader Ed Miliband said: “I am determined for Labour to look outwards, not just inwards. So I am looking forward to using this site to keep in touch with people who follow me here.” The Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said on his profile: “The Liberal Democrats are always open to new and innovative ways of communicating with voters, so creating a Google+ account was an easy and logical step.” According to findings reported by the Daily Mirror , 57 per cent of adults read or received information on the internet during the 2010 general election. Understandably Google UK’s MD, Matt Brittin, is very positive: “It’s great to see David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband embracing new innovations.” “Britain’s political parties and the UK Government are leading the world with new innovations in citizen engagement, from Google+ to online petitions and open data.” The presence of the politicians could also lead to larger user numbers as well, as the celebrity presence on Twitter was considered by some to fuel the microblogging outlet

Business leaders call for infrastructure investment

September 12, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

Business leaders have called on the government to invest more in re-developing Britian’s infrastructure. According to The Construction Index, a report published by the CBI and KPMG has urged officials to improve motorway and road links in order to better facilitate trade and to create new jobs for many skilled tradesmen , labourers and engineers. The report has shown that 58 per cent of businesses partnered by KMPG believe the UK’s infrastructure is worse than most other European countries. Last year, Britain was ranked 33rd on quality of infrastructure by the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report – ahead of Slovenia, Tunisia and Cyprus. Competitor nations France and Germany, however, ranked 10th on quality of infrastructure, prompting business experts to speculate that British industries may be at a disadvantage and losing profit to well-connected Continental competitors. As a result, both CBI and KPMG have encouraged the government to invest in Britian’s road and rail networks.
