Google merges privacy settings

January 25, 2012 by admin · Leave a Comment

Google has announced changes to its privacy policies that from 1 March will move users to one single, consolidated policy. “Despite trimming our policies in 2010, we still have more than 70 privacy documents covering all of our different products,” Director of Privacy, Product and Engineering Alma Whitten wrote on the Google blog . “This approach is somewhat complicated. It’s also at odds with our efforts to integrate our different products more closely so that we can create a beautifully simple, intuitive user experience across Google .” Most of Google’s products and services will be included in the new privacy policy – Google Books, Google Wallet and Google Chrome will all retain their own policies. As a result, the new policy grants Google explicit rights to combine users’ personal information across the majority of Google’s products and services. “Our new privacy policy makes it clear that, if you’re signed in, we may combine information you’ve provided from one service with information from other services. In short, we’ll treat you as a single user across all products,” Whitten wrote. For users, the new privacy policy means that when signed in, user data will be shared between services – for example, between Gmail, YouTube, Google+ and Google Maps – resulting in more refined search results and relevant ads. “We can provide reminders that you’re going to be late for a meeting based on your location, your calendar and an understanding of what the traffic is like that day,” Whitten said.

PayPal takes aim at Groupon

December 15, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

Daily Deals monger Groupon may have to brace itself for rough waters ahead as internet payment giant PayPal announces its intention to enter the daily deals market. With more than 103 million users worldwide, PayPal hopes to leverage its database of consumer information into targeted e-coupons and daily deals that will prove more relevant than the ones currently being delivered to their inboxes by competitors like Groupon and LivingSocial. According to Bloomberg News , the eBay owned company will make its foray into the land of daily deals in early 2012. PayPal will also work to edge out the competition by offering deals to users’ smartphones based on their location. For example – PayPal will alert users to available offers as they near a store or restaurant. "Sexy" scams attract men on Facebook

November 11, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

According to a recent survey, men are more likely than women to be scammed on Facebook, especially if the predator is a sexy female. The study – commissioned by anti-virus software company Bitdefender – surveyed a group of 1,649 men and women with adequate online security knowledge in the US and UK. The study found 64.2 per cent of women rejected unknown Facebook friend requests compared to 55.4 per cent of men. Men were even more likely to hit the ‘confirm’ button if there was an attractive female profile picture. On the flip side, women showed no noticeable difference when presented with a fetching photo of their target sex. Furthermore, about 24.5 per cent of men allow their profiles to be searchable by strangers, compared to just 16 per cent of women. Culturally speaking, the man/woman disparity is not completely surprising. Bitdefender’s social media security manager George Petre explained that women’s reservation in accepting offers of strangers predated not just Facebook and social networking, but the Internet as well
