Apple warns appayola-using app-makers

February 7, 2012 by admin · Leave a Comment

App Store competition can be tough, but Apple has warned the consequences of trying to game the system are tougher. Apple is reminding app-makers that using appayola services – paying to artificially inflate an app’s chart ranking – will lead to them being stripped of their ability to release apps in the App Store. In a post on Apple’s Developer website, the company said: “Once you build a great app, you want everyone to know about it. However, when you promote your app, you should avoid using services that advertise or guarantee top placement in App Store charts. “Even if you are not personally engaged in manipulating App Store chart rankings or user reviews, employing services that do so on your behalf may result in the loss of your Apple Developer Program membership.” The reminder appears to have come in response to a recent conversation on the forum for the mobile games site Touch Arcade. In the forum posting , an independent developer claimed to have been contacted by an ad network charging $5,000 (

January 6, 2012 by elegant · Leave a Comment

Google has announced its line-up of hardware partners for Google TV ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week. Major television manufacturers LG, Samsung, Sony and Vizio were all among the list of partners – Sony has already released Google TV televisions and set-top boxes in the past, while at the CES last year Samsung and Vizio showed prototype models. Head of Google TV partnerships Mickey Kim wrote on the Google TV blog : “Google TV is about bringing new entertainment and innovation from the Web to TV and our team along with our partners are pleased to bring more Google TV powered products to more people.” Google TV had a lacklustre reception following its initial launch in 2010 – critics argued the interface was too complicated for users, and after a number of setbacks Google TV’s key supplier Logitech pulled the plug on its support for the project after reportedly losing more than $100 million (

Google sued by BT over Android OS

December 19, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment

British Telecom has now entered the legal fray over smart phone patent infringement, lashing out at Google’s Android. The telecommunications giant is suing Google for billions of dollars over claims the Android operating system infringes on a number of its key patents, adding to the intellectual property actions already taken by Apple, Oracle, Microsoft, eBay and Gemalto against Mountain View. The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court for Delaware and relates to six patents, which BT said are infringed by Google Maps, Google Music, location-based advertising and Android Market products on Android. According to the lawsuit, “BT brings this action to recover the just compensation it is owed and to prevent Google from continuing to benefit from BT’s inventions without authorization.” The filing goes on to name a number of US patents BT applied for and, except for one, were granted in the 1990s, which it alleges Android is infringing on. If successful, the suit could mean Google or the mobile’s handset makers will have to pay BT royalties on each Android handset in use and that is produced. That could be expensive business – Android is currently the bestselling smartphone globally, with its handsets making up more than 40 per cent of sales and more than 40 million produced every quarter. Florian Mueller, an independent expert who closely follows international patent litigation, said: “Android already had more than enough intellectual problems anyway. Now Google faces one more large organisation that believes its rights are infringed

While one hand giveth Android 10 billion downloads , the other taketh away with a thousand malicious apps. The number of Android apps containing malware has doubled to 1,000 in the last six months, according to mobile security firm Lookout. The company’s recently released report “Malwarenomics: 2012 Mobile Malware Predictions” stated: “2011 has seen the emergence of a credible field of Android malware with a 4 per cent yearly likelihood of an Android user encountering malware, which was a significant increase compared to the beginning of the year. In the beginning of 2011 we measured a 1 per cent yearly likelihood.” The company, however, has indicated that the majority of the malicious content is found on third-party apps and other alternatives to the official Android Market. Regardless, Android users have found themselves with a growing risk of unknowingly clicking on links that can lead to malware and phishing sites. The report added: “The global yearly likelihood of an Android user clicking on an unsafe link is 36 per cent (6 per cent higher than July 2011).

Ofcom say mobile firms deliver better service

November 25, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment

Ofcom, the communications regulator, has published the latest of their regular customer satisfaction surveys. Their findings show that the respondents interviewed were happier with the level of service provided by their mobile provider than their online or broadband supplier. This improved level of satisfaction could further boost the popularity of mobile shopping and mobile devices like tablets and e-readers. The Ofcom research was taken from interviews with 3,000 people during September, asking if they had had any contact with their provider in the previous three months, and if they were satisfied with the level of service they received. The survey showed that 7 out of 10 customers were happy with the service their mobile company provided, even after calling about their service or tariff. However, only about 6 out of 10 were happy with their landline and broadband. Landline customer service ratings had improved for Sky, Talk Talk and BT since 2009, according to Ofcom. Yet, on average, these levels of satisfaction were still below those for mobile services
