SOPA Spells Loss — A SPN Exclusive Article
January 16, 2012 by elegant · Leave a Comment
Every business with an online presence – no matter the size – is going to be affected by the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which is set to be voted on when Congress resumes later this month. Companies like Google that provide a gateway to diverse content on the web will be hit directly, but even smaller businesses – from online payroll providers to ecommerce sites – could be affected, even if they don’t at first appear to have a direct link with anything SOPA was created to fight. Every user of the Internet, whether a business owner or not, needs to understand why SOPA exists and what the unintended consequences of this poorly considered piece of legislation will really be, both for small companies and the nation as a whole. After educating yourself, take action! If you disagree with SOPA and want to help stop it before it causes any damage, there are things you can do, both through your company and as an individual. What is SOPA? SOPA was introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives last October by Republican Representative Lamar Smith and 12 co-sponsors. It was created as part of an effort to combat online piracy on behalf of copyright holders by requiring that any site that links to or does business with an offending party be held legally responsible for any illegal acts the offender might commit, whether or not the site contacted is engaging in any illicit activities. What Does This Mean For Small Business?

If you’re reading this, you probably appreciate that I’m not talking about the cuddly bear type creatures, but the algorithm updates by Google that are reputedly designed to increase the quality of the sites ranking near the top of the results pages. There have been 2 major ones this year and they have stricken fear into the hearts of Internet Marketers the world over. People have lost rankings left, right and center and there has been widespread panic. First of all, a disclaimer. I don’t know precisely how Google works.

Google faces the music
November 17, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment
Google has launched its new service – Google Music – offering users cloud music storage and full-length album and song samples. At a press conference in Los Angeles, Google’s director of digital content Jamie Rosenberg took to the stage to announce some of the features included in the search seraph’s foray into music. With the service, users can upload up to 20,000 songs to the cloud – a feature already available in the beta version of the service. Google also announced it will be bringing music to the Android store. Android’s director of conference partnerships Zahavah Levine said : “We’re the first store that enables users to share their purchased music with their friends. This is the single most important way that people discover new music. I think that has the potential to transform purchasing power.” Google Music will also generate suggestions through its ‘recommendations engine’ to help users discover new artists – making use of selections made by friends. One of the most notable features – Artist Hub – gives small and independent musicians an opportunity to share their music and gives them control over how it’s sold, allowing artists to set the price of their songs – a huge contrast to Apple’s iTunes music store. Under the scheme, artists can create a page for an initial start-up fee, and keep 70 per cent of profits generated through song and album sales – there are no annual fees or upload costs.

10 Steps to Negotiating the Best Business Deal for You – A SPN Exclusive Article

Today in business you don’t get what you request– you get what you bargain for. You see, everybody asks “What’s in it for me?” So for you to get what you want, you’d better expect to answer that doubt for the people you collaborate with by learning negotiation know-how. I have had plenty of success in negotiating opportunities lately, specifically since I am not known as an expert negotiator. I have negotiated raises that were 5 times what was proposed, negotiated an executive level position worth thousands beyond the job description with triple the job security, and negotiated online services worth hundreds of thousands of estimated income for my company. How did an amateur like me accomplish these things and learn how to negotiate in business? Here are 10 steps that I use for effective business negotiation: Know What You Want … and What They Need How simple this sounds, but how difficult to realize. You need to know specifically what it is you want from the transaction or negotiation. Don’t wait for the other party to state their point of view to decide what yours is going to be. If you want a raise, how much?

Why Both Weight Loss and Google Rankings are Limited Goals
October 24, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
My husband and I were talking the other night about one of his pet peeves: When people start exercising and eating healthier, they usually measure their success by how much weight they’ve lost (or not) as shown to them by their trusty scale. It annoys him because, while losing weight is one sign that you’re doing things right, after a certain point, it can only tell you so much. It reminded me of my own pet peeve: how people usually measure the success of their SEO work by checking how well their site ranks in the search engines. Yet, similar to weight loss being a poor main goal for your health and fitness regime, where your pages rank for specific keyword phrases is also a poor main goal. Healthier Body – Healthier Website Your principal goal when eating in moderation and exercising regularly should be to become healthier overall, and ultimately to live a longer and more satisfying life.

October 19, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
It’s not so often that I will write on a subject that I am particularly well-versed in without using specific data to back it up (Well, I will use one example!). This article really is designed to take someone new to the World Wide Web, and “catch” them in time to create the proper tagline for their new site. A site tagline is basically its sub-title. Before we hit directly on the subject, let’s take a step back and start with the domain name. Finding the most suitable domain name for your niche target is critical. However, with so many sites on the web, you may not come away with exactly what you were looking for

Finally… Google Analytics to Provide Real-Time Reporting
October 12, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment
Like millions of other website owners, I use Google Analytics to analyze my website stats. And while I actually like GA a lot, it isn’t perfect. My biggest pet-peeve with the software is the fact it doesn’t provide real-time results. It has a lag time of at least an hour or two before you can view most of your data, and a full 24-hour lag time on full data reporting. With all the brilliant engineers Google employs, that particular flaw has never made any logical sense to me. That negative aspect of GA has been bugging the heck out of me for years. Well, finally, that’s all about to change and fast. How fast
