Google guns for Groupon with G+ data

October 28, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment

Google seems to be upping its efforts to steal Groupon’s coupon-clipping crown, as the firm announced it will now be using Google+ data and a new personalisation mechanism to better target deals. According to The Financial Times , Google let slip that it’ll soon be using G+ social signals as well as a new personalisation quiz in a bid to top the daily deals market by better targeting individual consumers and driving uptake. Google will now ask Google Offers subscribers to indicate what kind of deals they would like to receive information about. Group Project Manager at Google Offers Nitin Mangtani wrote on the Google Blog : “There’s a universe of amazing daily deals out there, but it’s hard to find them all in one place – and it’s even harder to discover the ones that really matter to you.” To solve this problem, the firm will use personal and social sharing data extracted from Google+ user profiles to determine what deals might be of interest to individual consumers, and ask users to weigh in on the kinds of deals they’d like to receive. Mantingi wrote: “We’re also introducing a personalisation quiz to help you find just the deal you want, all in one place.” The move has been labelled game-changing by Opus analyst Greg Sterling. Sterling explained that Google’s plans to utilise social data and user engagement platforms should help the company displace Groupon as a daily deals market leader, as the coupon clippers currently only track user purchases in an attempt to gauge individual interests. BIA Kelsey analyst Jed Williams added that increased personalisation could help alleviate the ‘deal fatigue’ felt my consumers who feel their inboxes are clogged with coupon-clipping, money-saving spam

Viral Marketing Buzz: How to Capture Your Market Online

October 5, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment

Viral marketing is still one of the most prolific marketing tools you can use to grow your business. If you employ it in the correct manner, it has the power to take you from obscurity to the “talk of the town” in a matter of days. If you are not sure what viral marketing means, it is a real simple concept. Viral means that it is something that gets passed from person to person and that spreads very quickly, much like a cold virus. Instead of making everyone sick though, you get your product or service spreading out everywhere instead. One perfect example of this concept is YouTube. How many times have you shared a funny video with someone

12 Things You Should Know About Hiring Someone From Elance

September 30, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

If you’re unfamiliar with Elance , it’s probably best described as what I like to call the eBay of freelancing. It is a great place to outsource any number of tasks – one that offers increased security with features like Escrow payments, fairness for providers with a $50 minimum project amount and the opportunity for each party to leave feedback after a project’s completion. Personally, I wouldn’t look for freelancers anywhere else – despite there being a myriad of options including Fiverr, Craigslist or forums such as Digital Point or Warrior Forum. Coming from a developed country I morally object to getting someone to perform any professional task for $5 (it’s called exploitation) – that and with all these options you never really know what you’ll get, or in worse case scenarios if you’ll get anything at all. Though from what I’ve read some people can also have trouble getting the right results from providers at Elance – which is why I’ve put together this list of best practices. 1. Title Your Project Effectively Your title is what appears in the search results when freelancers are browsing for jobs. For that reason it’s best you make it as detailed as possible

Google+ opens doors to the masses

September 21, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment

Social networking newcomer Google+ has opened its social networking site to everyone, inconspicuously advertising the change on its search homepage. The project made its debut to fanfare in June, but was available by invitation only while the search titan stretched its sea legs in the competitive waters of social networking. Senior vice president of engineering Vic Gundotra wrote on the Google Blog : “The Google+ project has been in field trial for just under 90 days, and in that time we’ve made 91 different improvements. “We’re nowhere near done, but with the improvements we’ve made so far, we’re ready to move from field trial to beta , and introduce our 100th feature: open sign-ups.” “This way, anyone can visit Google .com/+, join the project, and connect with the people they care about.” Google is also rolling out new tweaks to its Hangouts feature, a service that facilitates group videoconferencing for up to ten people. Previously, the Hangouts feature was only available to PC users on the social network, but now mobile devices running Android version 2.3 and later with front-facing cameras will be able to Hangout on the go, with promises of the feature being available to Apple iOS soon. Google+ will also utilise Hangouts as a broadcast feature, where users can tune into Hangouts On Air.

Survey Results: Google Does Not Make You Dumber

February 11, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

Does Google make you smarter by bringing you access to a wide range of information? Or (as posited by analyst Nicholas Carr in The Atlantic) does having the ability to find anything you want at your fingertips make you lazier and less likely to engage in deep, critical thinking. That was the question posed by the Pew Internet & American Life Project to 895 technology stakeholders and critics through an online poll, and the results were fairly comprehensive – Google is not making us stupider.

The reaction from the public and industry insiders to Google Buzz — the search giant’s latest attempt at social media networking — has been decidedly mixed. But while much of the discussion has revolved around the usability and usefulness of Google Buzz, Computerworld reports that this has led to the first piece of legal action, as a Florida woman has filed a class action lawsuit against Google for adding Buzz to the company’s Gmail service.
