December 8, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

If you’re reading this, you probably appreciate that I’m not talking about the cuddly bear type creatures, but the algorithm updates by Google that are reputedly designed to increase the quality of the sites ranking near the top of the results pages. There have been 2 major ones this year and they have stricken fear into the hearts of Internet Marketers the world over. People have lost rankings left, right and center and there has been widespread panic. First of all, a disclaimer. I don’t know precisely how Google works.

How to Thrive in Virtual Business

November 16, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment

BUSINESS IN THE UNITED STATES 2011 Big changes are brewing in how America works right now. The financial threats of lower-priced competition from overseas, the strengthened effectiveness of a virtual business model and a fresh American desire for better quality of life have caused the extreme work shift. Virtual business, remote work, telework, distributed work, virtual staff like executive assistants, virtual teams– call them what you want– are now part of the corporate vocabulary. I spoke with Alan Blume, author of Your Virtual Success: Finding Profitability in an Online World. Alan’s opinion is that virtual work is altering the very nature of cities and urban centers, how we live and aggregate as people. As more business is done from remote locations, cities are rapidly becoming cultural centers where you find more entertainment than business. We just don’t need to be “at our desks” like we used to. Look no further than the commercial office space real estate ordeal in recent years and you’ll get the point. Companies who don’t adjust won’t be able to entice the best employees or thrive economically, and may soon end up like the newspaper industry.

Google to make text jump off the page

November 11, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

Google has acquired multimedia company Apture to bring users beyond the realm of 2D in Chrome. Founded in 2007, Apture’s technology is designed to help users make ‘contextual searches’, where relevant information and text ‘jumps off the page.’ “We’ve always believed that by transforming flat web pages into interactive multimedia experiences, we could enable readers to see, hear and truly experience the ideas on the page,” Apture said. Apture’s in-page search technology gives users instant access to additional information including text, images and video from sources across the web without leaving the page – a feature that, when powered by Google , could prove an incredibly useful resource for Chrome users. The feature also gives publishers an added opportunity for revenue – for example, a mention of a local sports team on a webpage could prompt an Apture search of that team and return results for videos, images, and ticket sales. Apture’s past customers have included the New York Times, Financial Times and Reader’s Digest. Google has yet to disclose financial details of the merger or whether Apture will move from its headquarters in San Francisco to Mountain View

SEO with WordPress Sites

Once you identify a keyword that you wish to rank in Google for you want to get your on-page S.E.O right. S.E.O stands for Search Site Optimization and is the method a website undergoes to boost its odds of being found in Google for the relevant keywords. Meta-tags are HTML ( site code ) classes that search websites use to identify which keywords an internet site is relevant for. There are three first tags you will need to get right ; ‘Title ‘, ‘Headings ‘ and ‘Description’. Page Title The page title must contain your keyword. It doesn’t have to only be the keyword but ideally your keyword should appear at the start of title and there shouldn’t be any more than 70 characters in your title. Hence for instance I may have titled the page something like ; SEO – Using WordPress To Lift Your Site in Google Or SEO – Why You Want an SEO Company Or SEO – Local Economy SEO Services What ever your keyword is use it in the page title. Advanced WordPress Tip Using a plugin like WordPress SEO by Yoast will permit you to make 2 different headings – one for Google and the search engines and one for human readers

Reader Rescue : Should My Meta Description Tags Just Duplicate My Title Tags?

October 11, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone From early days learning SEO, I went ahead and did all my meta descriptions with a bit of blurb about the page but my *Guru* has told me this is incorrect and I should include only the title of the page in the meta description, eg “Antique Dining Chairs” whereas I had put in “Antique Dining Chairs – over 500 chairs on display at the Glebe Antique Centre.  Dining chairs to match your table, occasional chairs for that special place in your home” . Any thoughts before I go and change everything yet again? Christine ————————————– Hi Christine From where I’m sitting, your *guru* is wrong. Remember, your meta description tag is often used as the snippet on the search results pages to describe your site. So apart from including keywords, it has to do the job of convincing people to click on it. A nonsensical list of keywords is not going to convince people to click so you have to balance it out with an appealing sentence, preferably including a call-to-action or reason to click. Yes, it’s important to put your keywords at the start of the tag if you can, but you have up to 160 characters in that tag indexed by search engines , so you should use the space to your advantage. Having a short, unimaginative meta description or simply copying your title tag is not going to make any difference to your overall rankings and is more likely to turn your potential visitors off. Google admitted that it no longer considers the meta description tag in their ranking algorithm anyway, so, other search engines aside, the main job of the tag in Google SERPs is to convince people to click on the link and visit your site

Add Guest Blogging to Your Article Marketing Strategy and Watch Your Traffic Soar – A SPN Exclusive Article

October 10, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment

There’s been a lot of talk lately that article marketing has gone the way of the Do-Do bird, especially since the Google Panda update. As I see it though, the value of article marketing hasn’t diminished at all, the process itself has just evolved. Add guest blogging to your article marketing strategy and bring it back to life. Most webmasters don’t realize it but guest blogging is another type of article marketing, one which produces much better results if done properly. After all, what’s a blog post? It’s just another article, only it’s published on a blog. And what’s a blog? A blog is another place to publish said article – just like an article directory but with better quality traffic. How Does Guest Blogging Help Your Traffic

That First Impression: Title Considerations

October 5, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

While it certainly isn’t as much work as crafting the body of a superior article, selecting a title for a piece is definitely an important element of the entire process of content creation. The title of an article is a multifunction web tool, providing opportunities for engagement with the reader and search engine in equal measure. Putting some thought into the title and how best to leverage its effects will help title choices provide a solid return on investment instead of burdening an otherwise good project needlessly. Making Wordplay Work The necessity of a good title is rather self evident if one plays a small game. Borrowed from Christopher Hitchens’ autobiography, Hitch 22, the game basically goes like this: Pick a popular movie title and change it just slightly to get a “title that didn’t quite make it” — Quiet of the Lambs, American Pastry, Mister Zhivago, the American Samurai and such all demonstrate the importance of getting things just right. A small change can eliminate the value of good wordplay or an entertaining twist of phrase in favor of something more bland and pointless. To that end, try to put some thought into the title

Producing A Marketing Campaign That Works With Google

September 28, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment

Oftentimes when marketing with articles, it’s easy to get the impression that you need to do something tricky or fancy to make your marketing efforts “work”. In actual fact, getting a higher website ranking and the accompanying upsurge in visitors is really very simple: 1 – First, you have to focus on your website or blog. Fill your site with lots of really interesting and helpful information for your viewers. It’s a great idea to have a website that is loaded with valuable content and that is updated with new information regularly. Your first task is to make a website that is really pleasing to your viewers. If your viewers are happy, then Google will be too. Google’s goal is to please its search customers, so if its customers (who are also your viewers) are happy with what they find at your website, then Google is going to be delighted as well. 2 – Once you have produced a fantastic website you start to think about marketing it.

Blog Writing Tips: Keeping Content Fresh

September 9, 2011 by creative · Leave a Comment

Content may be king, but to torture a metaphor somewhat, even the most brilliant crown can grow tarnished. Generating good content isn’t always an easy thing, and it requires a great deal of effort to avoid getting into rote postings and halfhearted content that isn’t of the quality a blog and its audience deserve. A lot already has been written about the common mistakes bloggers can make. Text walls, keyword cipher content, bland posts on stuff that’s been covered before — these things are not good. But simply pointing out what not to do isn’t very helpful. After all, anyone can “not do” certain things. But as any fiction writer worth the name will say, listing and focusing on all the things one isn’t going to do results in one not doing anything at all. There has to be a positive focus and some manner of a goal. To that end, what are some of the things bloggers can do to keep their content fresh and interesting?
