Deleted photos live on in Facebook servers

February 7, 2012 by publisher · Leave a Comment

Old Facebook photos may still be accessible for months – or even years – after being deleted, living on in the depths of the social network’s servers. First revealed in 2009 by Ars Technica, the firm recently queried Facebook again after discovering backup copies – that could potentially be accessed by users – still existed some three years later. “Users who might have had second thoughts about posting a photo could certainly remove the image from Facebook’s main user interface, but as long as someone had a direct link to the JPEG file in question, the photo would remain accessible for an indefinite amount of time,” the company said in a blog post . According to Facebook, a poorly-functioning legacy system is the culprit, but a new system is on its way to ensure deleted photos can no longer be accessed. “We are in the process of migrating these photos to the newer system to ensure proper deletion, but until this migration is complete, CDN URLs from deleted photos stored on this legacy system may still be accessible,” Facebook spokesman Frederic Wolens told CNET

Major tech companies join forces to stop phishing

January 30, 2012 by admin · Leave a Comment

Some of the biggest tech enemies have set aside their differences in the name of stopping phishing. Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo and eleven other email providers, social media properties, email security companies and financial institutions have announced a broad new alliance to combat email phishing known as Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance – or, DMARC for short. The goal of DMARC is to create new email standards to help stop spammers from tricking email and web-users into providing sensitive information, like credit card numbers and bank account details. To date, phishing has been relatively easy to do. Spammers simply simulate data in an email so that it looks like it came from a legitimate sender. Most phishing messages are caught by users’ spam folders, but many people still open emails that look real – leaving their personal and financial information vulnerable to theft. “One of the worst experiences for a user is being phished,” Adam Dawes, a Google product manager and DMARC representative said

Best Free Business Cloud Apps You Probably Haven’t Heard Of

January 27, 2012 by elegant · Leave a Comment

The title might sound a bit presumptuous, but the writers at Cloud Nation worked hard to compile a list of cloud applications that most folks who don’t spend time in the cloud aren’t familiar with. All of these cloud hosted applications are free, but some of them do use the freemium mode of app distribution. In other words, the apps’ core features function forever for free, but extra premium features are available with subscription or other pay-as-you go plan. Mail Chimp : Are services like Constant Contact becoming too expensive?

Twitter hushing tweets country-by-country

January 27, 2012 by elegant · Leave a Comment

Twitter tells the little blue bird to hush – but only in certain countries. In a sharp policy turnaround, Twitter has announced that it will now exercise the ability to withhold tweets depending on the rules and laws of specific countries. Previously, the social network had held firm to a stance of refusing to censor tweets that may contravene a country’s laws. However, until recently, the only way in which Twitter could block a tweet was to delete it across the service globally. In an official blog post yesterday, Twitter stated: “As we continue to grow internationally, we will enter countries that have different ideas about the contours of freedom of expression. Some differ so much from our ideas that we will not be able to exist there. Others are similar but, for historical or cultural reasons, restrict certain types of content, such as France or Germany, which ban pro-Nazi content. “Until now, the only way we could take account of those countries’ limits was to remove content globally

How To Measure The Return On Investment For Social Media In Marketing

January 17, 2012 by elegant · Leave a Comment

“ROI on Social Media? What bloody ROI?” It’s only the first week of January 2012 and already I’m hearing the same refrain as 2011! “How do we calculate the ROI on social media in marketing?” When you begin using social media in your marketing strategy or as a stand alone campaign, it is hard to determine how those numbers of followers and ‘likers’ stack up against delivery of a return on investment. We have clients who ask us this regularly so here’s some clarity for you. Measuring social media ROI is very difficult for a few reasons. The first is that it is very hard to use social media trackers for individual sales and the second is that social media is not a direct sales channel, it’s a relationship marketing tool.
