Facebook has been awarded a patent for something that may change the way many social media networks run. After filing a patent in August 2006, Mark Zuckerberg and friends have received the paperwork granting them the copyright for “dynamically providing a news feed about a user of a social network.” When Facebook first brought in its news feed, it was seen to be a worrying thing that would make it easier for users to ‘Facebook stalk’ pieces of their fancy

The buzz surrounding Google’s updates to Gmail has been usurped by an announcement from Iran’s telecommunications agency that it will be permanently suspending the Mountain View company’s email service in the nation. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Iranian government is planning to introduce a national email service for Iranian citizens, leading to the suspension of international services such as Gmail, which is popular with citizens due to its security features.

Facebook signs new ad deal with Microsoft

Social networking giant Facebook has signed a new advertising deal with Microsoft to regain control of its display ads and integrate Bing more fully into the site’s search engine . Smart Company reports that Microsoft will continue to sell text-based search ads on the social networking site, but the decision was made to replace Microsoft’s banner ads with Facebook’s own as these were felt to integrate better into the site’s culture. Facebook’s banner ads target users based on information in their personal profiles, and the company stated that this move will provide better value to its nearly 400 million users.

Google Social Search goes beta

Google’s efforts to integrate personalised social media results into web searches took a step forward this week, as the company upgraded its social search to a user-accessible beta version. The function had previously been limited to a Google Labs project , but now will be available publicly. It looks set to integrate blog posts, tweets and photos, amongst other content, into a user’s web search results.
